This sure is a bummer, especially for nerds like myself.

Hands down, one of my favorite writers in comics over the past few years has been Brian K. Vaughan.  Singlehandedly responsible for the stunning Y: The Last Man and the mind behind the great teen superhero book Runaways, he was one of the writers who was able to get me back into comics after the speculative 90s ruined my level of enjoyment.

So of course, a few seasons back, when he joined the writing staff of Lost, and seemingly was one of the staffers who got the show back on track during Season 3, few were as excited as me.

In turn, it’s with a heavy heart that I read today that Vaughan has left the writing staff of Lost, just months before the final season goes into production.

According to producer Damon Lindelof, he “has left for greener pastures.“Â  I presume he means the world of screenwriting, given that Marvel has optioned for a Runaways film, and director DJ Caruso (Eagle Eye) has expressed intent on doing a movie adaptation of Y, but considering how Vaughan has added such great moments of levity to Lost (Hurley writing Empire Strikes Back, anyone?), and was the writer behind one of the best episodes of the series in “The Constant”, I can’t help but feel that this is a huge blow to the show.

I guess we’ll see what happens when Lost returns for its final season in 2010.
