Of all the nerdy bands to ever nerd, I don’t think any have come near touching the geek relevance of Coheed & Cambria.

I say that with love of course, as ever since Second Stage Turbine Blade entered my ears back in 2002, I’ve followed them intently. But when other bands who call themselves nerdy at best drop phrases like “Cassie Lang” and “Twitter” into their verses, Coheed has always gone the extra mile. All their albums thus far have been part of an overarching story, one which has been adapted into various media, including a number of successful graphic novels.

Freshly announced from the band is the release of their new album, with a planned release date of April 2010.  The album, titled Year of the Black Rainbow, is set to be a prequel to the 4 albums which came before it, setting the stage for the storytelling which took place in their previous releases.

No further details like track titles are available at this time, but for the hardcore fans, they’ll be releasing a deluxe version of the album, which comes with a full 300 page novel, co-written by Coheed mastermind Claudio Sanchez, and well known comic writer Peter David.  How rad is that?
