The $300 Million Question ANSWERED: AVATAR Hits $1 Billion
I’m not really one to typically pontificate on the financial response of films, and I certainly not one to continue to report on this type of thing, but given that I wondered the entire time if the $300 Million risk of Avatar would be worthwhile, it’s surprising to be able to say this…
Just over two weeks since it’s release on December 18th, Avatar has officially made $1 Billion Worldwide.
There have been only FIVE films to reach this plateau, and director Jim Cameron already holds claim to one of them, with his 1997 film Titanic.
On a positive level, this may open up studios to being more friendly to working with visionary directors. While I do not necessary feel as if all movies should get budgets so high, I think it says something when a studio backs a creative person completely, and allows their vision to come to life, as Fox did with Cameron’s Avatar.
The next question - for whatever his next project is…does Cameron just get a blank check?
