You know, I like to think of myself as pretty cued into what's going on in Hollywood, but I had zero clue that Universal was working on a prequel to the John Carpenter classic The Thing (which, in and of itself, was a remake of a film from the 50's).

Filming is scheduled to start in mid-March, with Joel Edgerton (Kinky Boots, Smoking Aces) and Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Live Free or Die Hard) as the leads, but honestly - is there an audience for this?

I know that the film is a beloved cult classic, but the Carpenter original bombed at the box office back in the 80s.  It seems more and more to me that studios are wanting to take less risks on new films, and instead retrofit new ideas to known titles - and that worries me.
