LittleBigPlanet 2 Announced, Attempts To Make Buying Other Games Useless!
As I get older, it’s harder and harder for me to play video games. It seems for me to really get into a title these days, it either has to be quirky/interesting, or speak directly to my inner child.
Super Street Fighter IV and Batman: Arkham Asylum surely handled the latter, but it’s rare when a game does both. One such title to balance these parts of my brain was 2008’s masterpiece of a game, Little Big Planet.  With beautifully designed characters and damn-near-perfect platforming, it was an absolute joy to play. The real, long lasting quality of the game, however, was the fact that players could create their own levels, extending the life of the game well beyond what the developers could provide.
Two million levels later, how are developers Media Molecule supposed to follow up with a sequel?
Answer: You let the fans create WHOLE GAMES within Little Big Planet.
The first trailer for Little Big Planet 2 hit the web today, and to say the scope of this sequel boarders on ridiculous is an understatement. Media Molecule is using their Sony cash just right, and taking everything that was great about the original, and dialing it to 11…nay, 12! You can create platformers, racing games, action adventure games, shooters, even create narratives to flow through the titles…even design characters! This is going to be the Lego of digital entertainment if played right!
I also love the “we”, “our” tone of the trailer. Far too many games feel like it’s you versus the world…with Little Big Planet, we define a collective world, and gaming is better for it.
More details on Little Big Planet 2 should hit at E3 next month. Until then, I’ll keep hitting replay and drooling.
