Many times during the process of interviewing for press, cast members of films tend to say all sorts of crazy shit.  (Remember when Gary Oldman said Batman 3 would start filming this year at SDCC?)  So, take this all with a grain of salt.

While promoting Iron Man 2, Samuel L. Jackson did an interview with RadioBigBoy (linked below), and apparently, Sammy L was feeling a bit chatty, as he started to discuss not just IM2, but the plans for Iron Man 3 (uh-huh), The Avengers (yep), and…A S.H.I.E.L.D. movie?! (Cue Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige blowing a gasket).

Thus far, there has been no official word about a film about the Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate (formerly known as the Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division), but it would stand to reason that one of the dangling carrots to get Jackson to sign on to NINE movies as Nick Fury would be his own starring flick.

I’m a bit concerned however, at the possibilities.

Here’s what bugs me, even if it’s going to happen…

  • What's it going to be about? Let's be honest, the big mean Marvel superhero threat is going to be used by The Avengers, and without that, S.H.I.E.L.D. would seem like just another spy flick.
  • Will people care? Between the 3 Iron Men, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Spider-Man reboot, and Avengers, that's eight Marvel flicks spread over four years - will there still be a captive mainstream audience for such a flick?
  • Samuel L. Jackson's Age. Sure, as Nick Fury, he was one of my FAVORITE parts of Iron Man 2...but at 61, he'd be 63 at the earliest before S.H.I.E.L.D. gets going. I mean, it stands to reason that they'd put other operatives around him as a supporting cast (given that it's NOT a Nick Fury movie, per se), but a 60+ year old Sam Jackson doesn't sound like a big action guy.
But of course, I could be wrong...and the movie could rule.

…or it could be totally off base, and Jackson’s having fun with the fans.  Either way, I hate typing all those periods in S.H.I.E.L.D.

What say you, reader?
