Take one part Spider-Man, one part Iron Man and you’ll have the latest revamp of The Wizard of Oz!

Director Sam Raimi, best known for his work on the Spider-Man and Evil Dead franchises, has freshly signed on to head Oz: The Great & Powerful.

The latest in a seemingly non-stop trend of “reimagined” classic stories, Robert Downey Jr. will star as the titular character, in a story that takes him from being a circus wrangler to the mystical world of Oz, to becoming the so called “great wizard” who Dorothy meets in the classic tale.

I can’t say I’m entirely sold on the project, but if there is anyone who can play an enjoyable huckster, con-man or flim-flammer, it’s certainly Downey.  Giving the movie the nice touch of Raimi behind the camera only adds to my intrigue, as this has to be something out of the ordinary to attract both.
