Hinted at with hushed tones and a t-shirt giveaway at SDCC 2009, Zack Snyder’s next film Sucker Punch had been, to this date, a relatively secretive project.

Well, now we have the first character banners for the film, and while it doesn’t help us with grasping the plot of the film, described as follows:

Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of Baby Doll , who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in mental institution and while there she starts to imagine alternative reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is caught by a vile man. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate.
...what these posters do help us with, is giving us an idea of the unique visual style to be presented in the film.

In these posters, depicting Emily Browning as Baby Doll, Vanessa Hudgens as Blondie, Abbie Cornish as Sweetpea, Jamie Chung as Amber, Jena Malone as Rocket and Carla Gugino as Madam Gorski, it’s made clear that at least the fantasy side of the film is some crazed bastard child of 50’s pinup art, and the surreal art deco feel of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.

Either way, it gets my nerd juices flowing.  Add Jon Hamm to the cast (really, he’s in it too!), and I’m sold!

Sucker Punch hits theaters on March 25, 2011.
