I intended to post about this earlier, but it seemed that every day a new twist of the story was coming out.  And honestly, I’m still not sure what was going on.

Last year, Warner Bros enacted what I considered a masterstroke, enlisting Christopher Nolan to produce and supervise the return of the Superman film franchise.

The concept was simple enough, Chris Nolan has guided Batman to such amazing success, why not have him architect the future of the theatrical DC Universe?  And with films being put together with Green Lantern, Flash and Wonder Woman (at the time), it just made sense. Marvel has pushed their united movie universe to the peak of success, giving fans and moviegoers an amazing world to partake in, each movie from different angles, culminating in a forthcoming Avengers film.  Why not duplicate the success seen at Marvel with DC?

Then…things got weird. Nolan proclaimed that his Batman wouldn’t exist in the same universe as his Superman. Word of mouth (and the first trailer) for Green Lantern was quite poo. The Flash became some weird “Matrix meets Silence of the Lambs” hybrid. Wonder Woman became a sure-to-be-crap TV show.  And Zack Snyder, who was hand picked to bring back the Superman franchise, shit the bed with Sucker Punch.

But we had good things to look forward to, like the DEFINITIVE end of the Chris Nolan Batman saga, with The Dark Knight Rises! Right? R–right?

Well, one interview with WB head Jeff Robinov threw it all out.

Yes, the Nolan saga will end with Rises.

But they’re going to immediately start work on a NEW Batman film franchise.  With Nolan overseeing it.  How will it be different? I have no idea. But different enough to consider it “different”, I guess?

And he also decreed - there WILL be a Justice League movie.

Wait a second - a Justice League movie?

Maybe that’s why they’re relaunching Batman! To combine him with the other franchises! Let Nolan finish things on his watch, and then rebuild the DCU! That’s gotta be the plan, right?

Yeah. No.

Since the interview has come out, we’ve learned a few things thanks to some interviews.

  1. According to Zack Snyder, his Superman movie will NOT connect to the Justice League movie.

  2. According to Ryan Reynolds, he has NOT been approached about starring as Green Lantern in the Justice League movie.

  3. The new Batman will be separate from the Justice League Batman.

So let me see if I have the number of universes that will exist for the theatrical DC Universe, come the release of Justice League.

  1. Christopher Nolan's Batman Universe (Begins, Dark Knight, Rises)
  2. Zach Snyder's Superman (Superman: Man of Steel)
  3. The Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern Universe
  4. The NEW Chris Nolan Batman Universe
  5. The Justice League universe, which has it's own unique Green Lantern, Batman and Superman.
Why the holy hell would they want to do this?

I…I give up.  And will probably document each step on this here blog.

Get ready to track my growing insanity, gang!
