It's Sony Smash Brothers - PLAYSTATION ALL-STARS BATTLE ROYALE Revealed!
"Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal." - Pablo PicassoWell, I guess the team at Sony game developer SuperBot Entertainment is a bunch of great artists, as this is the most obvious game stealing idea since the big run of company based kart games!
Revealed overnight on Sony’s PlayStation blog, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is the Super Smash Brothers Melee clone multiplayer fighting game coming for the PlayStation 3 featuring iconic characters from the (thus far) three generations of PlayStation battling it out. Confirmed on the roster so far is Kratos from God of War, Parappa from Parappa the Rapper, Sweettooth from Twisted Metal, a Heigast from Killzone, Sly Cooper from Sly Cooper and…really? Fat Princess from Fat Princess.
The first trailer and screenshots were shown, and I’ve showcased them here.
Honestly, I’d like to be more excited about gaming these days, but I have to admit, this is a perfect example of what bores me. Every year it’s a new version of what came before with little being done to push gaming forward. Maybe this is just a sign of me growing old or growing bored with gaming, but aren’t the returns of certain games better when they’re longed for or unexpected (see Street Fighter IV, Marvel vs. Capcom 3), as opposed to feeling like we’re just hitting a checklist of “Oh, it’s 2012, where’s this years version of ____ ?”
That’s not to say great games can’t come from existing properties or ideas, but I really feel like the reason why Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are losing ground to iOS and Android games is because risks are really being taken there by unknown or previously unheard of developers.
I realize, I’m taking the announcement of a game and turning it into something more than it is, and hey, PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale could end up great - but wasn’t it really cool when you saw the first look at a game and went “I have no idea what to expect from this.”?
Look for more on PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale to be revealed during E3 2012 in June.
