Here’s an announcement which will either have the nerds very excited or very worried…

The cyberpunk classic Snow Crash, written by Neil Stephenson, will finally be made into a motion picture.

That’s right, the 1992 novel, starring lead Hiro Protagonist (still makes me cringe a bit), all about a computer virus which fries users brains called (appropriately) “Snow Crash”, is being made into a film by Paramount Pictures, and the choice of director has me very giddy.

They’ve chosen Joe Cornish.

Not ringing a bell? Cornish made his name as a director to watch with last year’s superb Attack the Block, and it looks like he’s been headhunted to go straight to the world of massive blockbusters.  Given his immense geek cred, it’s only appropriate that he takes on a project this long in development.  Knowing what he was able to do with such a small budget on Attack the Block, I have no doubt he’ll be able to properly pilot a larger scaled project like this - even in a time where it seems like no one else can.

No word on a release date or casting, but this is a project I will definitely be keeping an eye on.
