Next March, Neill Blomkamp, director of the superb District 9, will finally release his next motion picture - Elysium.

To this date, we’ve known little to nothing about the project.

However, last night in Hollywood, the first screening for the film took place, and because of that, the first official synopsis leaked.

Open your ears, here’s what Elysium is all about:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
It seems once again Blomkamp is going to touch upon a hot-button topic (in this case, immigration) and place it in a sci-fi world to find ways to discuss it.  What is it about genre films that allow such topics to be more freely discussed? I mean, Prometheus was essentially a movie about atheism, and bam, just seen as a big explodey alien movie. Funny how that is.

Elysium also features the acting talents of District 9 star Sharlto Copley and William Fichtner amongst others, and is set to hit theaters on March 1, 2013.
