In an event which many believed would be dominated by Marvel NOW! announcements (and had a shocking lack of them), the biggest news coming out of SDCC 2012 from the comics world had to be the unveiling of a brand new prequel to the classic DC Comics series Sandman.

This new series, due to be released in 2013 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the original series, returns original writer/creator Neil Gaiman to the world of comics to tell the beginnings of the series' star, Morpheus.

Joining him for the ride will be hot artist JH Williams III, an appropriate choice given the mind-bending layout of his Batwoman pages.  Honestly one of the finest artists in the industry, I have a hunch that his pencils will perfectly compliment Gaiman’s words.

All that said, I certainly hope that this is a story Gaiman wanted to tell, and he didn’t just jump in to doing to avoid a Before Watchmen scenario.

Perhaps we can spot a hidden Warner Bros gunman in the YouTube video announcing the series? You make the call:

Gaiman/William’s Sandman prequel will hit shelves in 2013. And yes, that’s turned the correct way.
