One of my favorite games of my FPS filled middle school days was Rise of the Triad.

Developed by Apogee Software, Rise of the Triad always felt like the first-person shooter with the most fun behind it.  Sure, games like Duke Nukem 3D had the actual, written “humor”, but Triad had a series of selectable characters, ridiculous weaponry, and unique cheats like God Mode (which actually gave you new powers) and Mercury Mode (which allowed you to fly through levels).  And who can forget Dog Mode, which was EXACTLY what it sounded like (you became a dog).

It really seemed like the creators didn’t just want you to play through the game, but also find fun and unique ways to break the average game pattern.  I look back on it fondly.

That said, with this week’s news from QuakeCon that they’re working on a recreation of the game using Unreal Engine 3, and will be hitting Steamworks soon.  Here’s the trailer!

I know it’s probably too much to hope for a Mac version, but gosh, I’d love to relive some memories.

Rise of the Triad is due to be released later this year.
