With 20th Century Fox rushing to take advantage of the fan goodwill after the 2011 success of X-Men: First Class, not to mention the new superstardom of Jennifer Lawrence, fans everywhere have been wondering - how will they follow up the 60’s set film?

It seems they’re going to bend the timeline, in homage to one of the greatest stories in X-Men history.

Sayeth producer Bryan Singer in an interview with IGN, the sequel will be X-Men: Days of Future Past.

For those unfamiliar with the story, the story is set in a distant, dystopian future, where mutants have been hunted down and killed, and the few which remain are being hunted down and killed by giant robots, known as Sentinels.  Originally published in 1981, it’s one of the most fan beloved stories in X-Men history, and holds up to this day.

While I’m not entirely sure how they will make the new movie series connect to the classic story (especially given that Hugh Jackman seems to be tied up with his own solo Wolverine film), the promise is there. If you’d like to check out the original story, you can pick it up at Amazon.com.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is tentatively set for release in July 2014.
