Just announced on the quarterly investment call for Walt Disney Entertainment, it’s official -  Joss Whedon will be returning to write and direct The Avengers 2 for Marvel Studios.

Additionally, Disney has confirmed that Whedon is consulting on the ABC/Marvel Studios Television project currently in the works.

More details as they come. In the meantime, get hype. I don’t know that anyone else could have balanced the humor, drama, action and heart in The Avengers quite like Joss, and I look forward to seeing him come back.

Update - 9:04PM Deadline.com updated with this official statement from Marvel Studios.

Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe.
So I guess we can expect Joss to deliver Avengers 2 for Summer 2015, while providing guidance for the show, and punching up the scripts for Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant Man. (Similar to the role he played in the Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor scripts.)

Congrats, Joss, the Marvel Universe is yours.
