Full of World War II wiz-bang action, beautiful jetpacks, an aerodynamic helmet and an adorable Jennifer Connelly, 1991’s The Rocketeer holds up as one of the most unsung superhero films of all time.  Lost in the aftermath of the amazing success of Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Rocketeer holds up even today as a great example of a quality early comic book film, even if the box office didn’t do as expected.  In fact, it’s arguably why director Joe Johnson received the Captain America: The First Avenger spot.

Sadly, in 2008, Rocketeer creator Dave Stevens passed away, but in the years since, IDW has done a masterful job of retaining interest in the character, with reprints of Stevens original work, two compilation series under the title Rocketeer Adventures and a brand new series launched last week from A-List talents Mark Waid and Chris Samnee.  So it seems like the time to strike the iron is now, and appropriately, Disney (who retained the rights to the character) are said by Vulture to be exploring the idea of a new Rocketeer film, 20+ years later.

Now, given that Disney owns Marvel, and Marvel Studios is absolutely dominating the world of comic book movies, couldn’t this be seen as an example of cutting off their nose to spite their face?  Honestly - I think it’d be a brilliant move.  In a world where the same people own Hot Topic and Abercrombie & Fitch, there are fewer things smarter than being your own competitor.

That said - I sure hope the movie is as good as the original, otherwise, why the hell are they bothering?
