I’m not sure if I’ve ever gone on record about it, but 1998’s Metal Gear Solid is my favorite video game of all time.

Created with a cinematic eye, but a strong focus on engaging, developed gameplay (a key mix which is lost out on many, even today), the game was beyond its time, and holds up well, even 14 years later.

I’ve loved the installments since, even as bizarre as the writing has become, but with the reveal of the next game in the series, it feels like Hideo Kojima is truly advancing to the next level with his next game - Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

Previewed first in Japan, and then shortly thereafter at PAX in Seattle, the game takes the stealth Metal Gear gameplay and advances it to a whole new world, literally - an open world, giving fans the chance to sneak in an almost Grand Theft Auto style environment.

The trailer revealed online (Japanese with English subtitles) focuses more on the story, but based on word from both unveiling events, I can’t wait to see what all is planned.

One key aspect - while not stealthy at all, seems full of the trademark surreal Kojima style of humor. Apparently, players will be able to call on helicopter support at any time from anywhere - and a song of your choice will play.  When demonstrated, “Flight of the Valkyries” was used, but I can think of more than a few songs which might result in some unintentional humor.

But enough about me. You’re here to see the trailer. Check it out.
