Lets get this out there - 3D is a gimmick. But 3D, like any good gimmick, can be used well in the right hands.  In this day and age, when directors can shoot movies in 3D from the start, and plan accordingly, there is zero excuse for post conversion from 2D elements.

So, as you can imagine, it breaks my heart to announce that word has hit today that Pacific Rim, director Guillermo Del Toro’s giant monsters versus giant robots adventure is being converted into 3D.

The first line from the article, as broken by Variety, really says it all…

Warner Bros. has strong-armed Guillermo del Toro to convert "Pacific Rim" to 3D.
...and that's a damn shame.

I don’t know that this is so crazy - make a good movie, and people will see it.  The Avengers broke a billion dollars. Avatar broke a billion dollars. Did the 3D help the box office? Absolutely. However, they were movies in the hands of adept filmmakers who planned on using 3D the whole time.

This is a shame.  But we can send a message - see the movie as it was meant to be seen - in 2D! Let your money talk for you.

While I have little doubt that this will not change the quality of the film being released, it really bothers me to see a movie with so much potential forced to fit a corporate ideal.

Pacific Rim hits theaters on July 12th, 2012.
