One of the big surprises for me this year was how damn good Chronicle turned out.

While from the trailers, you could surmise that the movie might end up as a bad cash-in of the popular found footage and superhero genres. Instead, you had a dark, brooding film, which ultimately reminded me more of Akira than anything else.

Given that the movie was cheap to produce and made a tidy profit, Fox is looking to produce Chronicle 2. The film is now in the scripting stage, with original screenwriter Max Landis, and apparently it’s hitting some snags.

Max’s father John Landis (the famous director) was being interviewed by The Playlist when the topic of the sequel came up, and here’s what he had to say:

[Max] wrote a sequel and it’s amazing… and the studio read it and said, We want Chronicle’ again!’ And he said, No, this is the sequel, it’s the evolution, and they said No, we want that movie again!’ So it’s difficult, we’re dealing with a difficult business.
While this certainly isn't the first time that a studio has wanted to play it safe, I have to say that given how much of a breath of fresh air the original film was, it's sad to see the studio wanting more of the same.

Of course, now that word has gotten to the internet about the troubles, it should be interesting to see how things play out from here. Will Max Landis be dismissed? Will they start the spin control? Will John Landis learn to not speak about his son’s business?  Will Chronicle 2 be crap?  We’ll all find out soon.

Chronicle 2 has no release date at this time.
