I suppose that it shouldn’t come as a surprise that if Lucasfilm can keep a sale to Disney top-secret, that an actual, honest to God treatment for Star Wars: Episode VII can be kept quiet as well.

And that’s the big rumor today.  Apparently, a full treatment had been prepared by Lucasfilm just in time for the purchase by the Walt Disney Company, and honestly, I think they have a good writer in mind, even if it’s not one that you might have expected.

The writer in play? Michael Arndt.

Having first made a name for himself with the Oscar-winning screenplay for Little Miss Sunshine, Arndt has branched out with a diverse variety of work. He wrote the screenplay for Toy Story 3, handled the script for next year’s Hunger Games installment, Catching Fire, and clearly has impressed the Disney camp, with scripts for the 2015 Pixar film (currently titled The Untitled Pixar Film That Takes You Inside The Mind) and the Phineas & Ferb feature.  He’s also dabbled in sci-fi, writing the script for next summer’s Oblivion.

So it’s clear he has the chops, it’s clear he can work with existing characters (did anyone think Toy Story 3 would be THAT good?), and it’s clear studios love him.  But will the fans? And will this treatment mean anything by the time the film actually gets into production? Or is it just rumor and scuttlebutt? Stay tuned.
