While the trend in animation these days seems to be directly headed towards continued 3D realism, one studio sticking steadfast to the world of 2D animation is Studio Ghibli.

Headed by the beloved Hayao Miyazaki, Ghibli consistently churns out some of the most wonderful films in the history of animation, but while they’ve stuck to their guns on 2D animation, one does wonder - what would their designs look if they were more realistic?

Digital artist Andrew Michael Golden decided to see this through, and has put together some wonderful, eye-opening and overall well done images of Ghibli classics (including My Neighbor Totoro, Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke, among others) if they existed in real life.
