We already knew that the sequel to X-Men: First Class was going to take the mutant franchise reboot from the swinging 60s into the far off future, but it now looks like that X-Men: Days of Future Past will unite the original X-Men trilogy with the new series, with the signing of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

The story was confirmed by director Bryan Singer (returning for the first time since X2: X-Men United) via his Twitter account.

I know, X-Men: The Last Stand kinda is the odd man out now, what with that movie having killed Stewart’s version of Xavier, but lets not worry about timeline issues - Stewart and McKellen are fantastic as Professor X and Magneto, and it will be great to see them do their thing again.

What’s really cool is that we’ll see them interact with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as well, as Singer also confirmed their casting (along the very popular Jennifer Lawrence returning as Mystique and Nicholas Holt returning as Beast).

This news has made me dramatically more excited for X-Men: Days of Future Past. Here’s hoping that the resulting film retains the momentum built up from First Class. I do wonder, was this Mark Millar’s first big move as the comic movie head for Fox?

X-Men: Days of Future Past hits theaters on July 18th, 2014.
