Last weekend brought about the 2012 edition of the Video Game Awards on SpikeTV.

While the awards themselves are usually tripe, the gaming industry has decided to make the night important by revealing exclusive trailers for rather important games.  Usually these are the blockbuster top-tier titles coming out, but on Friday night, one trailer stood out.

That would be for the game The Phantom Pain, by a new developer called Moby Dick Games.  Check out the trailer.

As you can see, it’s a very different game, putting you in the shoes of an amputee patient, who is in a military hospital when things start going very wrong. An action-horror title from the looks of things, this is one hell of a debut.

Or is it?

Quickly after the reveal of the trailer, fans started researching the game extensively, first discovering the website of Moby Dick Games, which is rather stark and low on detail for a game development company.

Then someone noticed something about the logo for The Phantom Pain. I’ll let this GIF say it all…

That’s right. The Phantom Pain is Metal Gear Solid V.

The clues are literally hiding in plain sight, with Moby Dick Games being headed by CEO Joakim Mogren…Joakim being an anagram for Kojima, as in Hideo Kojima, director of the Metal Gear Solid games.

Certainly is a new direction for the series, but is this trailer also a red herring? Time will tell. Well played, Konami.
