While it may come off as hyperbole, reading through the details described by Polygon in an exclusive article released before the holiday, Disney Infinity may be one of the biggest moves in gaming ever.

Set to be formally announced sometime next month, Disney Infinity is the long-term result of years of development and experimentation from the team at Disney Interactive.  Scheduled for release on consoles, iOS and Android, the game is somewhat of a sandbox - you’re given the a variety of different Disney based worlds (Andy’s Toybox here, the world of Monsters Inc. there, etc.) and your choice of characters from all throughout the combined Disney and Pixar history, and you can play almost any type of game, depending on the character you’ve chosen.  Wreck things as Ralph, fly and shoot lasers as Buzz Lightyear, race as Lightning McQueen…and pick up your game from the console on your iPad or vice versa.  Now imagine a new Disney movie comes out, with new worlds and characters…you’ll be able to get them involved too.

Apparently the “Toy Box” mode found in the game versions of Toy Story 3 were the first hint of this project, and in January, we’ll have a better idea as to how this all works, but from the onset, this sounds like an incredible revolution in gaming, with some of the world’s most beloved characters serving as our dip into what could be a very large gaming pool.

If everything works, this could be the beginning of a change of how games work (imagine if the next Grand Theft Auto is the “last”, with new cities, characters and stories being released over time).  Stay tuned for more details as we get them.
