Despite polarizing reviews (we liked it), the much anticipated Zack Snyder directed reboot of the Superman franchise, Man of Steel debuted this weekend to a massive $125 million, making for the biggest June box office debut of all time.

We already know that Warner Bros has green-lit and fast tracked Man of Steel 2, but according to a new post from The Wall Street Journal, we may see it way sooner than any of us have expected.

Citing sources “close to the studio”, Man of Steel 2 is aimed for a release in 2014, with the long in production Justice League movie, combining Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and other DC Comics heroes following up in 2015.

I say that this is a near impossibility.  Huge tentpole films take years to prep - even the massive Marvel Studios plan allowed for a minimum of 2 years between sequels.  Sure, could a script for Man of Steel 2 already exist? Absolutely - but to rush it out in the span of the year not only could take the toll on Snyder, writer David Goyer and star Henry Cavill, but to then compound it with a Justice League film (rumored to include all of that talent as well) sounds like workload based suicide.

I don’t doubt that the Wall Street Journal has their ears to the ground, but I think they’re placing them near some cow patties.  Either way, I expect some sort of huge announcement to come from the DC/Warner Bros camp during San Diego Comic Con this year - and Marvel Studios to react in kind.  It’s a good time to be a superhero fan.
