With a worldwide record box office take of  $2.7 Billion dollars, it’s safe to say that audiences en masse sure did love themselves some Avatar.

Appropriately enough, 20th Century Fox has been working hard to ensure that an Avatar sequel would be developed, and it seems that James Cameron will deliver…three times over.

Starting filming next year, a second, third and fourth Avatar will be filmed back to back to back.

The plan is for Avatar 2 to release in December 2016, Avatar 3 in December 2017, and the series to end with Avatar 4 in December 2018.

To make this work, however, James Cameron is going to need some help.  In turn, after plotting the films, the screenwriting duties will be split up. Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) will write one film, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes' Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver writing one, and documentarian Shane Salerno writing a third.

No word on the budget, but considering the first film cost nearly $250 Million, this is a big money play by 20th Century Fox.  Here’s hoping it works out.
