Fans worldwide were tingling with anticipation yesterday as the BBC prepared to announce the twelfth incarnation of Doctor Who,  and after an hour long live television program, the smoke cleared and taking Matt Smith’s place will be…

Peter Capaldi.

A longtime fan of Doctor Who, Capaldi is an interesting choice for the character. Inverting the movement towards younger Doctors, Capaldi is in his 50’s, and is best known for his performance as the Thick of It/In the Loop character, the foul-mouthed Malcolm Tucker.

Never the less, he certainly seems to be approaching the role with a certain joy and reverence. Here’s his first interview about the role from last night’s show.

Capaldi will take on the role starting at this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, and proceed to take the lead into Season 8 of the new series. No word on how long he will stay on as the Doctor, or how they will extend the Doctor’s lifespan beyond Capaldi (a long running story within the series is that the 12th Regeneration would be the Doctor’s last).  This is not his first appearance in the show, having played Caecilius in “The Fires of Pompeii”, a 2008 episode which also featured future companion, Karen Gillan.

For those who want to see what type of fun Capaldi may bring to the series, here’s a fantastic NSFW montage of his best work as Malcolm Tucker.
