Daily Blast: July 17th, 2014
It’s been a crazy week for comic fans so far, and it’s just going to get crazier as we are one week away from the start of Comic-Con International, AKA San Diego Comic Con, the biggest pop-culture show of the year.
In turn, it’s another jam-packed edition of the Daily Blast - with Marvel news galore, video game documentaries and so much more. Trust me when I say, this is the best selection of stuff to read you’ll find all day.
At the top of the post: Revealed last night on The Colbert Report, the worst kept secret in comics has been confirmed - Sam Wilson, the Falcon, will be taking over as Captain America, with his own comic, All-New Captain America launching in November. But, wait! There’s more! Check the comics section for that…
Movie
- Director Duncan Jones (Moon) is wrapping up production on his adaptation of the Warcraft franchise. So, what’s next? If his Twitter is to be believed, he’s going to try to make Mute - his Blade Runner-esq sci-fi film, finally.
- A few more Guardians of the Galaxy character posters have made their way to the web. We’ve got John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey (above), Glenn Close as Nova-Prime, and Michael Rooker’s blue-tinted turn as Yondu.
- Universal Studios is enlisting Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek) and Chris Morgan (The Fast & The Furious) to reboot the classic Universal Monsters into one, united Marvel-style franchise. Why can’t things just be things, anymore?
TV
- Mondo will be releasing a limited edition 7" vinyl of the opening and closing themes from Batman: The Animated Series at SDCC 2014. There will be 5 variant covers available.
- I’m not sure why, but Syfy is making 12 Monkeys into a TV show. The trailer doesn’t look out and out awful, but I feel like there’s no way it will ever be as good as the film.
Gaming
[vimeo.com/67819530](http://vimeo.com/67819530)- For a limited time, the documentary More Than A Game, all about competitive fighting game players, can be watched for free on Vimeo.
- Mondo has teamed up with Insomniac Games to release an exclusive poster for Sunset Overdrive at SDCC 2014. This marks  the first video game based poster from the Austin, TX group.
Comics
- So as it turns out, the new Thor and the new Captain America were just the beginning for Marvel Comics, as this fall brings Avengers NOW!, the third phase of Marvel’s NOW initiative, which started with Marvel NOW! in 2012, then became All-New Marvel NOW! in 2013.  We’ll be seeing a new Iron Man series with Superior Iron Man, and if the promo image above is any indication, expect expanded roles for characters such as Dr. Strange and Ant-Man (just in time for their movies), the Inhumans, and…yep, Angela, too.
- Oni Press has a number of SDCC 2014 exclusives planned, including the Evil Edition of the color reprint of Scott Pilgrim Vol. 5, and of course, a Ramona Flowers bag, for all the cosplayers.
Tech
- It looks like Amazon’s going to take a stab at being the Netflix of books with Kindle Unlimited. Sorry, Oyster.
Toys
- Sideshow Toys will be releasing a high-end premium statue of cult-classic DC Comic’s anti-hero Lobo in 2015. The figure will feature interchangeable heads, and thankfully, isn’t based on the New 52 look.
- Of all places, the Wall Street Journal got to reveal LEGO’s SDCC 2014 exclusive, Rocket Raccoon and his Warbird ship from Guardians of the Galaxy. It’ll run you $40.
- Yep. Even MORE Funko! SDCC 2014 exclusives have been revealed, including - most importantly - a Superman shirt wearing Sloth, from The Goonies!
- Adding to their lines for Doctor Who and Breaking Bad, Titan Merchandising has now announced a blind-boxed vinyl figure line for Buffy: The Vampire Slayer.
- And of course, as the distributor of all things comics, you just know that Diamond has to have some rad SDCC 2014 exclusives, right?
Music
[www.youtube.com/watch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-0TEJMJOhk)- Weird Al’s officially up to 3 of his 8 videos for Mandatory Fun, his new album released on Tuesday. The latest video - a collaboration with College Humor, is for the Lorde spoofing “Foil”.
Food
- Frito Lay is once again bringing the “Do Us A Flavor” Potato Chip contest to the world, this time allowing happy eaters to choose between four flavors, including Bacon Mac & Cheese and Cappuccino? Whatever. Lets just hope they don’t botch it like they did last year, with the pick of Cheesy Garlic Bread.
That’s all for this lovely Thursday. See you on Friday, nerds!
