Daily Blast: July 23rd, 2014
The news flowed free over the past 24 hours, but don’t worry, we’re here to bottle it fresh from the stream.
That’s right kids…it’s time for another Daily Blast!
IN TODAY’S EDITION: LEGO Batmen! Cheap Batmen! High End Batmen! Patton Oswalt’s got a new book and even more!
Steel your nerves, and READ ON!
At the top of the post:Â Complex got the exclusive reveal for what is arguably the coolest SDCC 2014 exclusive - Â a 1966 Styled LEGO Batmobile set. $40 for those at the show, countless more dollars for chumps like me looking on eBay.
Movies
- When Adam Sandler and Peter Dinklage battle video game characters in Pixels, who will they battle? All the classics - Donkey Kong, Pac Man, Centipede and more!
- Edgar Wright may no longer be directing Ant-Man, but don’t worry, he’s got a new original film on the way. Wright has closed a deal to direct Baby Driver, an original film described as “a collision of crime, action, music and sound.”
- Sony Pictures Animation is teaming with Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions for a movie reboot of classic TV series…Manimal. Really.
- That’s pretty rad - one of the Guardians of the Galaxy posters created by the Poster Posse collective has been selected by Marvel to be an SDCC 2014 Giveaway! Congrats to artist Matt Needle.
- The trailer for Studio Ghibli’s next, When Marnie Was There has all the makings of another animated masterpiece.
TV
- This is our first look at Agent Locke (Mike Colter, Zero Dark Thirty), the lead character in Microsoft’s TV series Halo: Nightfall, based on the first-person shooter games. Apparently, he’ll be popping up in the Halo 5 game as well.
- Just in time for the big comic book thingy, Lucasfilm and Disney have released an extended trailer for the new Star Wars Rebels cartoon. It’s definitely feeling like a Clone Wars sequel.
- This amused me. Apparently, if you cut off Steve Harvey, you can knock out an episode of Family Feud in 3 minutes.
Gaming
- EA and DICE have announced that the police squad inspired Battlefield Hardline is being pushed into 2015, as opposed to its planned October 2014 release.
- Disney Infinity 2.0 will be getting a PlayStation exclusive Collector’s Edition. In related news, I still am struggling to keep my defenses up against this game. (You just KNOW 3.0 is Star Wars…)
Books
- Shooting up high on my list of “shit I HAVE to read” is Patton Oswalt’s next book, Silver Screen Fiend. Due out in January 2015 - and available for pre-order on Amazon.com - the movie is about his addiction to films. I know that feeling too well.
Comics
- To mark today’s Batman Day celebration (the character is 75 Years Young!), DC Comics is putting 750 digital Batman comics on sale for $1 each. What should you get? I’d start with Detective Comics #871-881, Scott Snyder’s brilliant “Black Mirror' run.
- Speaking of digital comics - word on the street is Comixology is going DRM-Free? Interesting…
- I’m not sure what this image is trying to say, but if I could put money on it: Grant Morrison (All Star Superman) is writing a book for BOOM! Studios.
Toys
- Mezco Toys has announced their “The One: 12 Collective” series, which takes the high-end costuming you normally see in 1:6 scale (12” figures), and applies them to a 1:12 scale (6" figures). First up? Batman from The Dark Knight Returns.
- Up next in Funko’s new Fabrikation line: possibly the most adorable Rocket Raccoon EVER!
- Ashley Wood’s 3A Toys is getting into the DC Comics business. Even money says this new toy line will be A. Expensive and B. Shown off at SDCC this weekend?
- NECA is continuing their line of 8-bit colored figures (and our trend this post) with a Michael Keaton styled Batman figure due this October.
- Up next on the “How did Walgreens become the home of so many exclusive toys?” train: a “Hand of the King” styled Tyrion Lannister figure from Game of Thrones.
- The Angry Birds Transformers toys are just awful, really.
Music
[www.youtube.com/watch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zss1EHSuT1A)- So, the theme song from the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. As good as - or better than - “TURTLE Power”?
- Yesterday, a new Weezer song. Today, a new Rentals song. THE LATE 90s ARE SO HYPED RIGHT NOW.
That’s your Daily Blast for today. Enjoy your Wednesday!
