The surprise 2014 SDCC announcement of a King Kong-prequel, titled Skull Island from Legendary Pictures surprised many - especially since no one even knew such a thing was in production.

Well - the movie is officially moving forward, as a star and director have been signed.

Sure to excite fangirls everywhere, Loki himself, Tom Hiddleston (Thor: The Dark World) has joined the film as its lead.  Directing the film is a left-of-center choice, Jordan Vogt-Roberts. Vogt-Roberts put himself on the map last year with the great comedy The Kings of Summer, but clearly is on the radar of studios for bigger films, as he is directing a Metal Gear Solid adaptation for Sony. This is probably a similar move to Universal’s pick of Safety Not Guaranteed director Colin Trevorrow to take on Jurassic World. Have someone with chops with actors, and let the action be handled by a proper second unit.

Skull Island hits theaters on November 4, 2016.
