Man, oh man. The reboot of the Terminator franchise is NOT getting off on the right foot.

Earlier today, Entertainment Weekly unveiled their two special edition covers featuring the cast from the beginning of the new Terminator franchise - the unfortunately titled Terminator: Genisys.

Let’s have that title sink in for a minute, yeah?

Ok. Bad. Now, get ready for it to be even worse.

The franchise looks to be serving many masters with the cast of this reboot, which aims to be everything Terminator Salvation wasn’t.

We’ve got big time geek leads, such as Game of Thrones’ Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor and Doctor Who himself, Matt Smith as a mystery character. To please the studio, we’ve got Jai Courtney (who you may recall the awful A Good Day to Die Hard) as Kyle Reese and Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke as a future John Connor.

And then, we got to see the images.

Hoo boy. That’s what the studio and magazine agreed were the best images? Clarke looks bored. The costumes look like bad cosplay. And if Matt Smith is supposed to - at all - look like a bad ass, well, someone failed miserably here.

Perhaps I’m being too harsh. Sometimes, great movies have awful publicity photos.

Surely, the plot can’t be awful, right? Let’s see what the accompanying article has to say…

Twist No. 1? Sarah Connor isn’t the innocent she was when Linda Hamilton first sported feathered hair and acid-washed jeans in the role. Nor is she Hamilton’s steely zero body-fat warrior in 1991’s T2. Rather, the mother of humanity’s messiah was orphaned by a Terminator at age 9. Since then, she’s been raised by (brace yourself) Schwarzenegger’s Terminator—an older T—800 she calls “Pops"—who is programmed to guard rather than to kill. As a result, Sarah is a highly trained antisocial recluse who’s great with a sniper rifle but not so skilled at the nuances of human emotion.

Yep, that’s right. The T—800 is now Sarah Connor’s daddy. Guess they’re going with the old adage of “If you CAN do anything with time travel, you SHOULD!“
