Warner Bros Stacks The Deck With 'Suicide Squad'
Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment are working hard to take the comics movie crown away from Disney and Marvel Studios, and the next part of their connected universe is moving forward proper, with the official announcement of an absolutely star-studded cast for Suicide Squad.
Director David Ayer (Fury) is taking the lead for the film, which seems to share really only the title and the general concept from the team, while being closer in tone (and cast) to the 2011 reboot of the comic series, complete with Harley Quinn.
The movie places a number of super-villains under the control of the US Government, with their focus on doing the jobs too extreme for the government, in exchange for shortened jail time.
What makes this theatrical version of the Suicide Squad different, however, is the first-time inclusion of one of the biggest DC Comics villains of all time.
Here goes…your theatrical Suicide Squad is…
Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Joker
Will Smith (Men In Black) as Deadshot
Tom Hardy (Inception) as Rick Flagg
Margot Robbie (The Wolf of Wall Street) as Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney (A Good Day To Die Hard) as Boomerang
Cara Delevinge (Anna Karenina) as Enchantress
This is clearly a HUGE cast, with some bold choices.
Clearly, DC is not worried about legacy, as they go with the Oscar winning Jared Leto stepping into the purple suit of The Joker, with Heath Ledger’s interpretation still echoing through fans minds. Will Smith in what is typically a masked role will be interesting to see, if only to see if they cover the face that for years and years, sold tickets worldwide. (Also, a nice easter egg, as Will Smith kinda started us on the road to Batman v. Superman) Robbie gets a big time role as Harley Quinn, and I’m sure Hardy will do just fine post Mad Max, even if we’ll all be lamenting that he isn’t still Bane. I have no feelings about Delevinge, but goddamnit, why do we keep trying to make Jai Courtney happen, Hollywood?
Word is that DC is looking to Suicide Squad to be closer in tone to Ocean’s 11, which explains the star heavy cast. Apparently the stars will shine even brighter, as Jesse Eisenberg is said to be reprising his role from Batman v. Superman as Lex Luthor, and the strong taskmaster of Amanda Waller is said to be circled by either Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, or…get this…Oprah Winfrey.
Of the DC Comics films in progress from Warner Bros., Suicide Squad already sounds like a better result than the introduction-heavy Batman v. Superman, but time will tell if this is the beginning of a rivalry with Marvel, or a second round knockout.
Suicide Squad starts filming this April, and hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
