It’s amazing the things which can enter the crossfire of a Hollywood misunderstanding. Sometimes, it’s the movies you want to see the most.

In an article discussing the already troubled adventure to the silver screen for the latest attempt to revive the King Kong franchise, Kong: Skull Island, The Hollywood Reporter dropped an absolute heartbreaker of a bombshell.

Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to del Toro’s Pacific Rim, which was made under the Warners deal and turned into one of those films that grosses a lot ($411 million worldwide) while being so costly that a follow-up isn’t a sure thing. Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project — which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 — has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).

Yep! Due to a pissing match between financing studio Legendary Pictures, and their former distribution partner Warner Bros (who really wants to bring King Kong in to build a universe around the revived Godzilla franchise), and Universal Pictures (who stepped in as Legendary’s distributor, which has resulted in a mixed bag of hits and failures), we may see Legendary working again with Warner Bros….which puts Pacific Rim 2 in a world of limbo.

Goodness, between news like this, and the end of the Silent Hills project over at Konami, this has not been a great year for Guillermo del Toro.

At least we have Crimson Peak coming in October.
