The X-Men franchise has been a mixed bag of films, but has been on a hot streak since flashing back with 2011’s First Class.

This May, the mutants enter a stacked Summer of superhero films with X-Men: Apocalypse, and the first trailer is here.

I’ll admit, what we see here is pretty decent, and I’m very into Oscar Issac’s Apocalypse, but the rest just feels…off.

One of the strengths of First Class and Days of Future Past was the relationship of James McAvoy’s Charles Xavier and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto, which appears to be lost here, and it’s quite clear that Jennifer Lawrence is just completing her contractual commitment as Mystique, as she doesn’t even appear to be bothering with the blue makeup this time around. Shame, as she’s usually such a highlight.

There’s also the question of how the timelines work now. Following First Class and Days of Future Past, we get the 1980’s-era here in Apocalypse, and in turn, a new Jean Grey (Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner) and new Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), and new Storm (Alexandra Shipp, love the mohawk), among others - so do X-Men, X2 and X3 just not exist anymore?

On the positive side, Rose Byrne is always a welcome vision, and McAvoy is rocking the cue-ball look.

It’s a mixed bag so far, and the trailer doesn’t really impress, but based on the strength of the other two films of this trilogy, I am in. Will that be enough to counter Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Captain America: Civil War? We shall see.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits on May 27, 2016, just in time for Memorial Day.
