Paramount wanted a big time, fun action Star Trek film to get some of that Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy audience. Looks like Star Trek Beyond will be that film, if it’s first trailer is any indication.

Hitting the web earlier today after a German-language leak, our first glimpse at the third installment of the rebooted Trek franchise, as directed by Fast & Furious' Justin Lin and scripted by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, is definitely not your standard Star Trek film.

We’ve got explosions, we’ve got quips, we’ve got crazy alien makeup, and yes…BMX RIDING KIRK!

From what I’ve seen on social media today, long-time Trek fans are pretty miffed by the results, but personally? I think this will be a super fun sci-fi romp, a’la 2009’s reboot - sorely needed after Star Trek Into Darkness went dark and retreaded Wrath of Kahn. Heck, we’ve even got a reprise of Beastie Boys' “Sabotage”, a “classic rock” song which scored Young Kirk’s joyride in the first JJ Abrams film.

I think Star Trek Beyond is going to be a nice shot in the arm for the franchise, and future trailers will pan out to this being a great bit of blockbuster filmmaking. But based on fan response so far: is the path to a Billion Dollars one made of broken dreams by Paramount?

Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22, 2016.
