Not since Summer 2007, when Bad Robot and Paramount released the trailer for 1-18-08 have I seen movie fans so surprised, shocked, and excited. So it’s only fair that it’s about a sequel - of sorts - to Cloverfield.

Remember that amazing 1-18-08 teaser? If you don’t, here’s the trailer that had everyone wondering if a Godzilla reboot or Voltron movie was coming…

Well, last night, during the first screenings for 13 Hours, the Michael Bay directed Benghazi movie, Bad Robot and Paramount had another surprise under their sleeves. It immediately broke Twitter, and lead to a number of phone shot cam versions hitting the web.

So - what is 10 Cloverfield Lane? How did this get made without any of us knowing?

Let’s first look at JJ Abrams' official statement about the movie, provided to Collider:

The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.

OK, so the sequel may not be a direct one. It’s a “blood relative” - so a related idea in some way. But how did we miss such a thing being made?

Simple. You call it something else.

At one point called The Cellar, and another point called Valencia, the movie was described in the press as follows:

The majority of the movie takes place in an underground cellar, and revolves around a young woman who wakes up in the cellar after a severe car accident and fears she has been abducted. Her captor, a doomsday prepper, tells her he saved her life and that there has been a terrible chemical attack that has left the outside uninhabitable. She does not know what to believe and as tensions rise, she decides she must escape, regardless of the terrors that await outside.

Well, now we know that the girl (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) is being held captive by John Goodman (Acting’s John Goodman), and a bearded John Gallagher Jr. (The Newsroom) is there too.

Is the “terror” outside the monster from Cloverfield? We’ll find out in a few months, as the movie releases in March.

10 Cloverfield Lane hits theaters on March 11, 2016.
