Godzilla has been reborn for a new generation. And he looks angry.

While we here in the states were blessed with a new, franchise-leading Godzilla in 2014, it’s been twelve long years since the terrible lizard wrecked havoc in his native Japan (with the last film being 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars).

This Summer brings Godzilla Resurgence (also known as Shin Gojira), and prior to today, all we had was a simple teaser trailer…emphasis on the tease.

Today - however, we got an incredibly affective trailer, which, in a move that shows how different US marketing is from Japan, features no dialogue, but instead, some of the film’s visuals with a haunting and affecting music track…plus some trademark Godzilla roars, of course.

This looks incredible, and much as the original Godzilla in the 1950’s prayed upon atomic fears, it’s clear that this instance is using imagery similar to that seen after the 2011 Japan tsunami.

The film is co-directed by Shinji Higuchi (who worked on Gamera films previously), and Hideaki Anno (who broke anime nerd’s brains with Evangelion), so there’s a definite pedigree there.

All I can say for sure - this modern version of Godzilla looks like he’s been through Hell, and he’s now here to raise it on our cities.

Godzilla Resurgence hits theaters on July 29, 2016 in Japan. No official US release has been announced at this time.
