2014’s Whiplash was one of the most dumbfoundingly strong debuts of a director in recent memory.

Beautifully shot, with an incredible cast, and an intense build-up - Whiplash garnered Oscar noms, and a well deserved win for Supporting Actor for JK Simmons.

More importantly, it put writer/director Damien Chazelle on the map.

In turn - when I heard he was moving onto his next film, I was waiting with bated breath for any details. When I found out that it was an original musical (!) starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone (!!), I was even more delighted.

Today, the teaser trailer for La La Land has hit, and it delivers on the promise such an incredible, raw, collection of talent would leave one expecting.

As beautiful as the cinematography in Whiplash was, Chazelle (working alongside cinematographer Linus Sandgren - known for American Hustle and Joy) looks to be doing the defining modern-day version of a Hollywood musical.

Scored by the original tune “City of Stars" (already available on iTunes, of course), the promise of this trailer is huge. Big names, fired-up director, incredible talent surrounding them (including JK Simmons, along with John Legend - yes that one - and Rosemarie DeWitt), this could be a very big movie this Christmas.

At the very least, the first vinyl-esq poster is lovely.

Now, if you excuse me, I’ve got a tune to whistle until it leaves my head.

La La Land hits theaters on December 6, 2016.
