Some Quick Thoughts on 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle'
Since the movie has been out for two months and made nearly a BILLION dollars, I’m going to hold off from writing a full review of this one.
Let’s face it - you probably already knew if you wanted to see it.
That said, here’s some quick fire thoughts on the movie:
- I think Dwayne Johnson is the key to making Kevin Hart bearable. I really love the chemistry these two have.
- It was nice that the movie actually didn’t make too many illusions to the original Jumanji. Just enough for those who remembered it to catch, but it didn’t beat you over the head with having to know certain references.
- I loved how the humor came mostly from genuine character beats.
- I’m very happy that Karen Gillan got a full on starring role. I was worried that with the failure of Selfie, her role as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy would be all that she’d have as a post-Doctor Who success, but she was TONS of fun here.
- I was surprised at the lack of major set pieces for the movie. Now that I’ve seen that it cost “only" $90 Million, that makes sense.
- Always a joy to see Marc Evan Jackson and Rhys Darby get work.
- WAS THAT THE DUDE FROMÂ TOO MANY COOKS AS THE FOOD VENDOR!?!
- Possibly the best video game movie not based on an actual video game besides Edge of Tomorrow.
- That said: why does a cartridge based game show a Loading screen?
- I’d really love to see another movie with this cast, but I have zero clue how it’d work.
- Vaguely spoiler-y note: Was it just me, or was one element of the Epilogue REALLY creepy?
All and all, a really fun movie that fits perfectly in the realm of “Lazy Sunday Afternoon" movies, even if I saw it on a Monday morning. I’ll grab a cheap iTunes code for this one for sure.
