Change Is Coming to the Oscars
The Academy's board of governors has approved several major changes to the tradition-bound ceremony's format in the hope of retaining the dwindling number of Oscars telecast viewers it still has and luring others back into the fold ahead of the 91st Academy Awards on Feb. 24, 2019.
Among those changes:
- The television broadcast will be trimmed to three hours.
- Certain award presentations will not be shown live, instead done during commercial breaks and shown in edited form in the broadcast.
- A new category will be added “for outstanding achievement in popular film".
All of these changes are happening to help curb the drop in ratings for the awards show over the past few years.
I think that it’d just be smarter to find a way to stream it online and grab viewers that way. It’s bizarre to me that in this day and age, it’s practically impossible to (legally) stream the Oscars.
