Check out a brand-new trailer for Disney and Pixar’s “Lightyear," an original feature film releasing June 17, 2022. The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear—the hero who inspired the toy—introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.
Chris Evans lends his voice to Buzz. Annie Award-winning director and veteran Pixar animator Angus MacLane helms “Lightyear." Galyn Susman produces.
I have to say, since this project was announced, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect from a Buzz Lightyear Origin film, but this first look makes me feel pretty damn optimistic about the potential of this film.
Way back when Pixar was winding down their contract with Disney in the mid-00’s, they were working on a slate of movies which were supposed to push the envelope of what their movies could be. Those ended up being Ratatoullie, Wall-E, and Up.
The rumor was, had Disney not made the massive deal with them they did, that Pixar would try to push the perception of what an animated movie could be forward with a more mature project.
I hesitate to use the word “mature" here, as we’re definitely going to have some elements for the whole family (here comes a toy of that cat to ShopDisney.com), but the leap forward in tone and visual storytelling is very clear here.
Also, I’m super hyped for Angus McLane to get to finally direct a film solo. He was always a standout in the DVD extras of Pixar films, and he’s also a pretty damn great LEGO builder too.
In short? I’m in.
Lightyear hits theaters on June 17, 2022.
