So! Guess what dropped at 8pm Eastern on a Saturday Night?

If you had, “The first teaser trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the incredibly imaginative Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse!", well, that’s a bingo.

While a lot of this teaser (emphasis on tease) is an extension of the mid-credits scene from Into the Spider-Verse, showing Gwen Stacy returning to Miles Morales’ universe, it’s the second half which has fanboys like myself frothing, featuring the payoff of the post-credits scene, featuring the Spider-Man of the year 2099, Miguel O’Hara (voiced by Oscar Issac) for some reason, attacking Miles in a new costume.

In just about a minute of footage, the promise of the film is laid bare.

2. We’re going to see their universes, each with a unique animation style
   

The producers of the film, the ever awesome Phil Lord and Chris Miller, did a brief interview with Entertainment Weekly sharing a little bit more information (confirming the unique look and feel of each universe), but the biggest reveal comes right at the end of the trailer, as this isn’t just Across the Spider-Verse, OH NO, this is Across the Spider-Verse: Part One.

And yes, both movies are being worked on concurrently.

What truly makes this so exciting to me isn’t just “Hey, another Spider-Man movie!", we’ve been there, we’ve done that. Its instead the glimpse into what the team at Sony Animation — who took what they created with the first Spider-Verse film and ramped it up with one of this year’s best movies, The Mitchells vs. the Machines (available now on Netflix) — has been doing to further push the art of animation forward. That’s what I can’t wait to see. And we will, in just under a year.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) hits theaters on October 7, 2022.
