It’s a very big day for streaming, in my humble opinion
I can’t recall the last week that the collective streaming services were delivering three new releases I was so excited for, but here we are.
- Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (Netflix)
- This animated adaptation of one of my favorite comics of all time brings back the entire cast from its cult-classic movie adaptation….and apparently they’ve tweaked the story. Looking forward to seeing Bryan Lee O’Malley’s designs in animated form, but also what exactly they have in store for us, in terms of a 2023 Scott Pilgrim story.
- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (Apple TV+)
- I’m not sure how beloved the “Monsterverse” is, but I’ve been in the bag for every installment across the Godzilla/Kong franchise. This series promises to have not one, but two Russels (Kurt AND Wyatt) and actually deliver some decent human drama, with the giant kaiju battles as the backdrop.
- Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (Peacock)
- I really love the work of current SNL short film darlings Please Don’t Destroy, so I was very disappointed when it was announced that this movie wasn’t getting an August theatrical release, but instead, a November streaming release. That usually indicates a lack of faith from the studio, but based on the trailer, I am hopeful this is their Hot Rod, a movie comedy nerds will be talking about for some time to come. Bonus: I think this is Conan O’Brien’s first live-action movie role, as someone other than himself.

Anyway, if you need me this weekend, I’ll be in front of the TV.
