The Star Fox Direct will begin at 3pm PT on May 6, 2026. The presentation will be roughly 15 minutes.

Talk about a surprise.1

Announced at roughly 5:50pm Eastern, then airing online at 6pm Eastern yesterday, Nintendo shocked the world yesterday with the reveal of the latest installment of the beloved Star Fox franchise.

Fresh off the main character, Fox McCloud, appearing in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it’s a new game…well, it’s a new look, feel and sound, as it’s a major remake of Star Fox 64.

That’s really the concern of fans — it’s been ten years since the last new installment of the franchise2, and its basically a new coat of paint on an old game. One which had also been released for the 3DS in 2011. So we’re on our third revision of the same game.

Personally — I have (gasp) not played Star Fox 643, so this is great for me. I like the style, the gameplay looks crisp, and you can’t be mad at a $50 game in this market.

We’ll see what the reception is once it releases next month, but I definitely find it interesting that people are mad about this being a remake…but are excited about the rumors of a Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake…

Anyway…

Star Fox hits the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 25th.

  1. Kind of. ↩︎
  2. Unless you count the completion and release of Star Fox 2, which was released on the SNES Classic in 2017. So, nine years, then. ↩︎
  3. True story, my first Nintendo system was a Game Boy Pocket, then a GameCube. ↩︎
