The LEGO Movie (2014): A Review
On the abstract, The LEGO Movie is a terrible concept for a film.  Understandably, when the film was announced, the project was met with confusion and cynicism even from the most devout fans of the plastic building block.  But Warner Bros had a secret weapon. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, a duo designed to spin gold out of the most ridiculous of ideas.
A high school full of historical clones. A full-length film based on a twelve page children’s book about raining food. A goddamned film adaptation of 21 Jump Street. And yet, they made it work, and once again, with adversity and a $60 million budget on their back, they turned The LEGO Movie into something great.  This isn’t the glorified commercials that made up the He-Man and Transformers cartoons - this is arguably one of the finest family features in years.
The story is simple - Emmet (a wonderfully clueless Chris Pratt) is a construction worker by trade. His life is simple - wake up, get dressed, get coffee, build things, and always to the instructions. Lather, rinse, repeat.  And then in the Campbell-esq tale that it is, Emmet finds his purpose.  Upon finding the laughably titled Piece of Resistance, Emmet is made “The Special”, making him the finest master builder of all of the LEGO universe - including dozens of characters from such diverse pop-culture realms as Harry Potter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the DC Comics Universe, and yes, the 2002 NBA All-Stars. And with this magical piece, it’s his job to restore order to the world before the evil Lord Business freezes the world on the fateful day known as Taco Tuesday.
The plot is, appropriately, pieced together from other building blocks of film making - The Matrix, Brazil, Idiocracy - but much how LEGO has handled licensed characters in their sets, the concepts are exaggerated, over blown, and yet made even more universal. And in a twist wonderfully yet to be ruined, the third act builds to a turn that speaks to not only a universal truth of LEGO, but of art overall.  It’s a commercial turned philosophical, yet it keeps you laughing and smiling along the way.  The medicine is delivered with incredible amounts of sugar, and while your teeth may be grinding at the end, you’re better for it.
After seeing The LEGO Movie, you may wonder - how did they pull it off? While the writing and direction from Lord and Miller can certainly be thanked, a diverse and wonderful cast pulls you through even the most saccharine of moments. A who’s-who of comedic talent, you have Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect) as the Trinity-spoof Wyldstyle, Allison Brie (Community) as the adorable Uni-Kitty, Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) as half pirate, half boat robot Metal Beard, and Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny…) as, appropriately, hyperactive 80’s Space Man Benny. But the peak of the cast? Will Arnett’s Batman. Brooding, self-involved, and even a musician, this may be the greatest interpretation of Batman on film ever. It’s exactly what we needed after the great, but super-serious Nolan saga.  And while the acting is wonderful, prepare to be amazed by the animation skill of Australia’s Animal Logic studio, who turn a CG project into something conceivably stop-motion, making everything - and I mean everything - appear to be made from LEGO itself.
The LEGO Movie is a combination of risks - an unfilmable concept, a mixture of impossible licenses working together in a way not seen since Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and an incredibly gutsy third-act turn that, in any other film, may have come off as schmalzy. But with Lord and Miller, they stuck the landing, and given us an animated film that can hang among the modern greats.
For children of any age, or those adults who loved LEGO and one day let them go - this is the film for you. See it as soon as you can. My highest possible recommendation.

Seth Gordon To Direct 'Uncharted' Adaptation
Deadline.com is reporting that Sony Pictures is negotiating with director Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses) to direct the long-in-the-works adaptation of Uncharted, the PlayStation 3 adventure game series.
Gordon is the latest director in line to take on the franchise, as director David O. Russell (American Hustle) circled the project a few years back. We’ll have to see if this instance pans out.
Seth Gordon is no noob when it comes to games, as he first burst onto the scene with the documentary The King of Kong.

Aled Lewis Gets A Solo Show: 'Such Pixels' At Gallery 1988
Aled Lewis has quietly been making a name for himself, with 16-bit inspired artworks showcased in a number of Gallery 1988 art shows, including this incredible Shaun of the Dead piece that I had the pleasure of viewing in person.
On February 7th, he’ll be getting his first solo show, and /Film has a first-look at it, including pixel art celebrating movies as varied as Happy Gilmore and Thelma & Louise.
If you’re in Los Angeles, this is a show you’ll definitely have to check out. For the rest of us, we’ll have to wait until the 8th, as that’s when it all goes online at NineteenEightyEight.com.

they just confirmed a third season.
Presumably, this will continue the adventures of Kevin Spacey’s Frank Underwood, and lead to me having many moments of “Oh! I know where they shot that!”

Geoff Johns Returns, and John Romita Jr. Joins 'Superman' This Summer!
DC has announced plans to return superstar writer Geoff Johns to the monthly Superman title, alongside - in a stunning move - artist John Romita Jr.
Romita is best known for his legendary runs over at Marvel Comics, including Amazing Spider-Man and The Avengers.
To say this is an unexpected move is putting it lightly, and bodes well for the future of the Superman comic.
While no date or issue has been announced, you can expect Johns and Romita to join Superman this Summer.

'Justice League: WAR' Kicks Off DC Comics Animated Film Universe
In an interview with Comic Book Resources, producer James Tucker laid out the plan as follows:
This will definitely be the first salvo in doing new movies that are in continuity with each other. Our next movie's going to be 'Son of Batman,' and that Batman will be the same Batman that you see in 'Justice League: War.' Basically, we'll have two concurrent series of Justice League movies and Batman movies, and they'll be in continuity with each other. So it's kind of world-building.
Justice League: War, based off the 2011 Geoff Johns New 52 reboot of the series, is available now. -

Spoke Art Presents Tim Doyle’s UnReal Estate III’ This Thursday
Tim Doyle has been teaming up with San Francisco-based art gallery Spoke Art for, what is for my money, one of the coolest art shows of the year.
They’re combining forces once again with UnReal Estate III, opening this Thursday, February 6th.
/Film has an exclusive look at the show, which continues Doyle’s amazing run of dilapidated scenes from pop culture history. I can’t wait to see all of the pieces from the show. Can you recognize the origins?

OPTIMUS PRIME RIDING A DINOBOT: 'Transformers: Age of Extinction' Super Bowl Ad
It’s just 44 seconds long, but the first look at Transformers 4 gives us a Deception with a gun for a face, Mark Whalberg doing his thing, and OPTIMUS PRIME WITH A SWORD RIDING A DINOBOT (I’m assuming Grimlock?)
Should be some big dumb fun this summer.

Green-Band Trailer for 'A Million Ways to Die in the West'
Plugged with a surreal ad featuring Seth MacFarlane talking directly with his talking bear creation, Ted, here’s the new, all ages edit for the trailer of A Million Ways to Die in the West.
Minus the gore and naughty words, it’s a more family friendly look at the decidedly family unfriendly western.

Either way, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively has received word that Disney is working on a live-action relaunch of the 90’s cartoon franchise, Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers.
I’m going to assume Chip, Dale and company will be CG, while they interact with humans, whoever they may be.
Is David Cross too busy to appear in this?

Jeremy Irons & Jesse Eisenberg Join 'Batman vs. Superman'
Warner Bros broke the internet briefly on Friday with their latest casting announcements for Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel, currently known as Batman vs. Superman.
After shocking the world last August with the addition of Ben Affleck as Batman, WB followed up months of rumors and anticipation with the announcement of two new cast members.
In a move that makes sense, and feels far more perfect than ever envisioned, veteran actor Jeremy Irons will join the cast as the new interpretation of Alfred, Batman’s trusted right hand man and butler.
But in a shocking announcement, the new Lex Luthor was revealed as Jesse Eisenberg, best known for his appearances in The Social Network and Zombieland.
It’s certainly a new take on the classic Superman arch nemesis, but the longer I’ve lived with the announcement, the more I’ve enjoyed it. It’s only appropriate that a modern day Lex would be less an icon of industry, but instead a figurehead of a tech conglomerate, such as Google, or yes, even Facebook.
Thus far, the Snyder-helmed DC Universe launchpad has juked left when I expected them to go right, and at the very least, on paper, it’s making for the most unique superhero film yet. Â Here’s hoping it works out for the better in Summer 2016.

Red Band Trailer For 'A Million Ways to Die in the West' Doesn't Look Awful?
If the first, red band (for naughty language) trailer is any indication, the new Seth MacFarlane film can be summed up with it’s title.
In the forthcoming western comedy, there are truly A Million Ways to Die in the West, and many of them are gory as hell - hence the restricted nature of the trailer. Plus some very naughty language.
The cast - minus the x factor of MacFarlane himself - seems to be pretty darn solid, and maybe it’s my inner immature self, but I didn’t dislike what I saw of the film here!
We’ll have to see how it all comes together when A Million Ways to Die in the West hits theaters just in time for Memorial Day this Summer.

Kyle and Yost are no strangers to the Marvel U, having written for X-Men: Evolution and the most recent Avengers cartoon, and even having written a few issues of New X-Men. Yost also was a contributor to the script of Thor: The Dark World.
Yeah, I think this will be in the right hands.

'Fight Club 2' Gets Cut Into (Matt) Fractions
a new update from Palahniuk’s official fan-site, The Cult made it sound more interesting.

Could be interesting. More on this as it develops.
