Daily Blast: September 2, 2014

ThreeA-Toys-WBR-Mars-Romulus-Remus

Good morning, all! I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday weekend.

Mine was pretty good – got to kick back, relax, and enjoy some gaming (The Last of Us on the PS4) and movies (The One I Love, which I reviewed here).

Never the less, we are all back in the saddle today, including us, your pals at Blast-O-Rama as we embark on another…DAILY BLAST!

In today’s edition:

  • Lots of PAX Prime gaming news!
  • OK, lots of gaming news in general!
  • A surprise revival from Amazon
  • Superman’s a jerk
  • And so much more!

At the top of the post: Although I’m sure they’re expensive, these new WBR (World’s Best Robot) figures from 3A Toys look amazing!

Movies

miyazaki

– In a classy move, the Academy has announced that filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (Studio Ghibli) will be receiving a lifetime achievement Oscar at the 2015 ceremony. Miyazaki accepted the honor in his standard, stubborn way, saying: “Honestly, I don’t think there’s any need to give awards to people who have retired, but nonetheless, it is an honor.”

TV

greatestamericanhero

– Once again attempting to turn a bad idea into a good one, filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller (22 Jump Street) are producing a remake of the 1970’s superhero series The Greatest American Hero. They better not change that theme.

– In another great DC Nation‘s short, we find out how awful it is to be Superman’s friend, through the eyes of Jimmy Olsen.

TICK

– In a shocking turn of events NO ONE expected: People is reporting that The Tick live-action series will be returning on Amazon, complete with Patrick Warburton returning as the man in blue.

Gaming

new_nintendo_3ds_reg.0

– Friday morning, Nintendo hosted another streaming edition of Nintendo Direct. While many news bits leaked, the biggest was the announcement of the New Nintendo 3DS called…the New Nintendo 3DS. With a faster processor, ThinkBook-like analog nubbin and interchangeable faceplates, it hits Japan this Fall, but has no US or Europe release date. So far.

– PAX Prime was home to many announcements in gaming this weekend, including the latest from the world of Saints Row. In addition to a PS4/XBox One version of Saints Row IV, an expansion – titled Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell will hit in January. The trailer is above.

– Also from PAX: DoubleFine revealed a gameplay trailer for this October’s Costume Quest 2. I’m hoping it’s as sublime as the first.

smbf

– Even MORE PAX: Super Meat Boy developers Team Meat have announced their next game – an endless runner titled Super Meat Boy Forever.

– Finally from PAX, an incredible looking trailer for Firewatch, the debut game from Campo Santo, a small indie developer including popular artist Olly Moss.

– That Resident Evil HD re-release is looking pretty darn good. Even if it’d be like, the 80th time I’ve played through the original.

Tech

Windows-Live-Messenger-Logo

– Down goes a titan of the early-2000’s internet world: Microsoft has announced that they will be shutting down MSN Messenger. How much longer does AIM have for this world?

screen568x568

– I honestly feel like the best part of Reddit is the AMA section, so you better believe I’m in love with Reddit’s new iOS app.

Comics

justiceleague36

– Of all places, Buzzfeed got the exclusive announcement that artist Jason Fabok (Batman Eternal) will be taking over the reigns of Justice League, starting with issue #36.

That’s it for today! See you on Wednesday!
