As director Matt Reeves continues to attend to an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh is coming on to help finish principal photography for the final weeks of DC Studios’ The Batman Part II. The news comes after production was paused on the film so that Reeves could focus on the personal matter.
Really surprising news out of DC Studios this evening.
The production of The Batman Part II — not unlike its predecessor, which had a number of COVID-related delays — has been somewhat cursed, release date wise.
Thus far, the movie was scheduled to release on…
- October 3, 2025
- October 2, 2026
- October 1, 2027
- And currently: February 18, 2028.
The release had been delayed both due to different Hollywood strikes and a personal matter for Reeves. There’s no public word about what the issue was then, nor specifically now, but it’s not our place to know.
What’s heartening is that the movie will wrap filming, and Reeves will be able to complete the edit.
Steven Soderbergh, in addition to being a fantastic director with a remarkable filmography, is also known for his rapid production period and quick edits. Crucially for this instance, he’d also served as a second-unit director on The Hunger Games, where he seamlessly fit into the world Gary Ross had done on the film.
All I can say is this: if The Batman Part II is half as good as the first film (and the tremendous Penguin series) that came before it, and it’s technically another Steven Soderbergh movie, we’re in for a treat.
