While the movie has been teased recently on an Instagram account, I’m not sure anyone expected to see the first trailer for the third standalone Wolverine film, Logan today.

Very loosely based on the Old Man Logan storyline from 2008, Logan – titled after Wolverine’s real name – is the third solo film for the X-Men character, following the awful X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the forgetable The Wolverine.
This definitely looks to be unlike any X-Men film which came before it, with a darker, more morose vibe in play here – a proper way to close out Hugh Jackman’s 16 year run as the iconic superhero.
I really dig the heck out of this trailer, and the use of Johnny Cash’s cover of “Hurt” is a strong choice, but I wonder if the almost complete removal of connection from the X-Men films will be a good thing (after the relative failure of X-Men Apocalypse) or will leave audiences confused…since not many know Logan is Wolverine’s real name.
Either way, this will be the most unique superhero film for some time, and I cannot wait to see what Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold (Walk the Line) have in store for us this March.
Logan hits theaters on March 3, 2017.
